Proximo's Magic Dice

As most of Proximo's gladiators had already fought a match in September they had to wait until October for the next event. Hence, all three of Proximo's boys were entered into the next local Capuan event. What's more, Proximo coughed up 5 coin to put one of his gladiators into the Primus.
(If truth be told the whole event was quickly thrown together with the objective of trying out the camera on my new phone.)

Team Anthrax - the bad guys - boo hiss

Team Proximo - the good guys - hurrah

The first round was to be the traditional execution of criminals. For this the rival Capuan school of Gannicus Anthrax put up a gladiator (Bilius the Secutor) to face off against two Noxii (the notorious criminals Paulius and Bazzius).
As I hadn't played for awhile this was a useful rules reminder before Proximo's boys took to the sands. It also gave me a chance to test out my new black D10 dice - as it turns out they roll lots of 10s!

Bilius faces the Humorous brothers

Bilius was soon in action against one of the Noxii but in a surprise turn around took a couple of wounds from the lowly criminal (I'd allotted the magic black dice to the Noxii!).

Good team work from Paulius and Bazzius - To Me! To You!

Now pinned in contact with one Noxii, Bilius was then assaulted by the second criminal. For a while it looked touch and go for the Secutor, in combat with two opponents and the magic black dice, but after an initial set back Bilius turned the fight around and slaughtered both Noxii - who unsurprisingly aren't very resilient.

Paulius and Bazzius bite the dust
(and miraculously acquire some armour - I must make some prone Noxii!)

Now that the crowd were warmed up it was on to the main event with Androcles (hoplomachus) facing off against Unctuous (retiarius).
This was a bad match up for Androcles as the long weapons (spear and trident) would cancel each other out. At least the more nimble retiarius still had a net that he could use. What's more Androcles would be facing the deadly black dice.

Long Spear versus Trident - tricky

Within a few rounds Androcles was down to zero vitality and bleeding on the sand. Luckily,  the crowd was behind him and spared his life. He also earned an extra 5 coin for a spirited performance.

Triumph of the Trident

So a poor start for Proximo's boys but up next was Ostentatio the Thraex, a favourite with the crowd (love those feathers!). He was to face Arduous the Murmillo. The match started slowly with Ostentatio playing to the crowd - but the crowd were having none of it (twice awarding favour dice to Arduous!).

Ostentatio struts his stuff

Giving up on such subtleties, Ostentatio just got stuck in - to discover that the 'hex' was now off and instead the white dice were now rolling 10s. After a flurry of blades the Thraex had defeated his man and was awarded double prize money.
The thraex prevails - no messing about
As the sun went down it was on to the Primus (the sun literally was going down, hence the poorer lighting conditions for the photos.)
Symeon the retiarius took on Hideous, a heavily armoured provocator.

A classic disarm by the retiarius

An astounding performance here from the retiarius as he first disarmed his opponent and then put him on the ground with his signature trip move. The match would have been over in the second round if the Hideous had not sprung to his feet before a killing blow could be placed. Although the provocator was now back on his feet, Symeon had placed himself between Hideous and his dropped gladius. As there was little chance to recover his sword he was forced to fight on with the pugio alone. A dagger was no match for the trident though and the bout ended in round four. A convincing win for Symeon gaining an extra five coin.

Trip and Stab - a guaranteed crowd pleaser

A good result for Bibulus Proximo with all his boys gaining experience. He also made a 30 coin profit from the event
